The Vision for Fenix

Vision: Solve the healthcare need in our community.
Dr. Louise Berner founded Fenix to address unmet needs in the largely underserved immigrant community of Lake County, Illinois. Our patients need flexible hours, 24-hour emergency availability, follow-up care from providers they know, and education about ongoing treatment. Without compromising quality, the entire Fenix staff delivers comprehensive, culturally sensitive healthcare in fluent Spanish. Our clinic provides all of this at a cost that is 75% lower than other providers in the area.

Mission: Compassionate care in frontline medicine.
We are committed to meeting the unique needs of our patients with the special attention their circumstances often require. We treat every individual with compassion, cultural understanding, and respect for the challenges they face each day. Through excellent medical care, accessible wellness education, and mental health resources, we care for the whole person.

Why the Name Fenix?

Fenix is named after the mythological bird that rises from its own ashes. In many ways, the phoenix reflects the experiences of many of our Latino patients who come to the United States in search of safety, opportunity, and a new beginning. At Fenix, we support this transition by providing care that extends beyond healthcare alone, serving patients of all ages in the language they know best: Spanish.

When naming Fenix, Dr. Louise Berner saw the symbolism of the phoenix in three ways:

The patients:
Many patients come to Fenix facing physical, emotional, or mental health challenges. Through compassionate care, treatment, and support, they are able to heal, regain stability, and move forward with renewed health and hope.

A new beginning:
Many of Fenix’s patients are immigrants building a new life in the United States. Like the phoenix, they are starting over in a new place, and good health gives them the foundation to pursue opportunity, security, and a better future for their families.

The clinic:
Fenix represents a new approach to caring for underserved patients: one that is affordable, compassionate, and deeply personal. Through same-day appointments, low-cost services, Spanish-language education, and whole-person support, Fenix helps patients feel welcomed, understood, and empowered in their care.
